Day 17: Black Hills, SD and Chadron, NE, July 16, 2017

We got up and swam at the lake. Leia chased lots of sticks into the lake and swam with us. We decided to visit Nebraska since it is so close! We had not originally planned to go there, but since it was only an hour away and not very close to anything we decided to check it off the list. We stopped at Donald's burgers for lunch. We had their lunch buffet with a nice salad bar and pizzas. For dessert, I had a root beer float and mommy had a cyclone which is kind of like a Dairy Queen blizzard. We drove around the State College, which was beautiful. We drove to Chadron State Park. They had a grassy park where Leia ran around and met another doggy friend from Wisconsin. We drove back to South Dakota and drove along the Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park and on Needles Highway. After the drives, we went to Mount Rushmore. We had a very light dinner at Rushmore. We took the half a mile trail to get a little closer to it and get a great picture. We went back to the car and decided not to go for the light show because Leia was in the parking garage and she gets nervous in them. It was also very crowded!! We went back to camp and made a fire which we considered our best fire ever. The wind helped it because it gave it oxygen. We went to bed and were very tired. It was a great day!

Morning view from our tent at Horse Thief Lake.

Our expansive campsite on the lake. Breakfast with a view before our morning swim!!

The 42nd State!! 8 more to go!

Lunch at a local spot in Chadron, visiting the local college and playing in the State Park/ National Forest. We were told at the park this was the nicest part of Nebraska to visit!!

Lone Pronghorn on the Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park.

Bison out for their evening stroll.

The "Red Dogs" are adorable!!

Another Bison traffic jam. They were so close to the car!!

    1. Leia is a svelte senior dog indeed. I think she'll add a couple pounds this trip, even with all the activity. We more then made up for missing those meals!!
We had a bag of small Macintosh apples, they loved them!!!
