Day 16: Black Hills- Crazy Horse and The Mammoth Site, SD, July 15, 2017

We swam in the lake and relaxed at the campsite. It was so relaxing and the water felt great!  We headed to Crazy Horse to explore and have lunch. It was dog friendly and Leia could go everywhere except on the hardwood floors. We got some very cool Indian jewelry- turtle earrings and a bead necklace. Leia even got to inside with us at the fancy restaurant and we had a great lunch. We walked around Crazy Horse and learned about to Indian history. We drove down to The Mammoth Site. I got to go to an Advanced Paleontologist class and I was the only one. I got to dig for replicas of bones they have actually found at the dig site. I made plaster casts around the bones that later I pulled off and got to take back home. I found 6 bones- teeth, a tibia and fibulas. After, we took the tour and got to see the active dig site. They are going to remove a new mammoth skull on Monday. We bought our annual matching shirts in the gift shop. We drove to Crazy Horse and watched the Legends in Light show and saw the museum the Leia could not go in earlier in the day. Leia came out of the car for light show. It told the history of Crazy Horse and the sculptor. We drove back and went to sleep under the stars!!

Crazy Horse Scale Model and the Mountain carving in progress in the distance. The scale is immense- his head is larger than the 4 heads of Mount Rushmore. It is a slow process.

Charting the bones I found on the grid.

Brushing off a bone.

Making a Plaster Cast of a Tooth Bone.

Using the chart to figure out which bones I uncovered.

Digging for the giant Tibia

Patience and hard work pay off!! This one took a long time to dig out!

Columbian Mammoth skeletons at the active dig site

Gorgeous male Bison crossing the road at sunset- South Dakota traffic jam!!

  1. No mention of Mount Rushmore... A bit of a disappointment? My biggest disappointment was Plymouth Rock... digging at the Mammoth Site looked like great fun.

    1. We did Mount Rushmore the next day and no, it was not as impressive. It was so crowded, we left before the light show and we back and made a fire!!
